uPVC doors fail in predictable ways — the handle lifts but the key won't turn, the handle flops uselessly, or the door has to be shouldered to lock. Almost all of it is repairable without replacing the door.

The handle lifts but the key won't turn
This normally means the gearbox inside the multipoint mechanism has failed, or the door has dropped so the hooks and rollers aren't lining up with the keeps in the frame. Forcing it usually finishes off the gearbox completely.
I diagnose which of the two it is before quoting. Realignment is a cheap fix; a gearbox replacement is more involved but still far cheaper than a new door.
The handle has gone floppy
A handle that moves freely without engaging anything is a snapped spindle or a broken gearbox cam. If the door is currently locked shut with the mechanism engaged, this becomes an emergency — I can open it and repair it in the same visit.
The door is stiff and needs a shove
uPVC and composite doors expand and settle. Over a few winters the hinge alignment drifts and you end up lifting, leaning and shoving to get the handle up. That strain is what eventually kills the gearbox. Adjusting the hinges and keeps takes minutes and can add years to the mechanism.

Do I need a whole new door?+
Almost never. The vast majority of uPVC door problems are the lock mechanism, cylinder, handle or alignment — all replaceable parts. Replacing the door should be a last resort.
How much is a multipoint mechanism?+
It depends on the make and length of the strip, which I identify on site. I'll give you a firm price before doing the work, and there's no call-out fee for coming to look.
My door won't lock but it closes — is that urgent?+
Yes, treat it as urgent. An unlocked door invalidates most insurance policies and the fault usually gets worse fast. Call me and I'll get to you the same day.
